We're in the Decade of Ocean Science, but you wouldn't know it
Many people care about the survival of the whales. For example, the number of right whales left might be as low as 1400. What contributes much to viability of right whale population (now that humans have stopped hunting them to extinction) is upwelling. Upwelling creates blooms of feed for the whales, and easy feeding lets the whales save energy for other things like procreation. But our lack of knowledge about the ocean currents mean we have very little understanding of upwelling. Without such knowledge we certainly have no ability to put such knowledge to use to help the whales.
While ocean literacy is a good thing to promote for its own sake, ocean literacy is essential for learning enough to help whales, polar bears and other living things that depend on the ocean (including humans).
